This new operating system was presented with the name of Windows Phone 7 Series, and thereafter to make the logo more streamlined and easy to remember, Microsofthas decided to eliminate the "Series".
Microsoft stated that Windows Phone 7 would be sold in time for the Christmas holidays of 2010. Following the worldwide launch on 11 October 2010 , Europe's new mobile operating system has been put on sale October 22, 2010, to coincide with the release of the first models of devices targati LG, HTC and Samsung. For the launch in the U.S. will have to await November.
In July 2010 it was released the beta of Windows Phone Developer Tools, a free software package for developing applications for Windows Phone 7, which containsVisual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, Windows Phone Emulator,Silverlight for Windows Phones, Microsoft Expression Blend for Windows Phone and XNA Game Studio 4.0.

The work to create a new generation of Windows Mobile is started in early 2004under the code name "Photon", but the work proceeded slowly and the project was finally canceled.In 2008, Microsoft reorganized the working groups for the Windows Mobile and has started working on the new operating system. the product had to be launched in 2009 under the name Windows Phone, but many delay shave pushed Microsoft to launch the first Windows Mobile 6.5 waiting for the new OS.

Windows Phone 7 has been developed rapidly. One consequence is that the softwaredeveloped for previous series do not work on the new operating system. LarryLieberman, chief development of the Microsoft Mobile Developer Experience, said: "Ifwe had more time and resources, we could do something with regard to backward compatibility."Lieberman said that Microsoft has tried to look at the marketphones in a different way, having in mind the individual end user and enterprise networks at the same time. Terry Myerson, development engineer of WindowsPhone, said, "with the development of capacitive screens, without pen, and the adoption of particular choices of hardware for the Windows Phone 7, we had to stop the application compatibility of Windows Mobile
